What's a handyman job — and what needs an electrician

Swapping or installing a ceiling fan at a spot that already has a ceiling electrical box is squarely handyman work, and it's one of our most-requested fixture jobs across the Bay Area. We handle the fan-rated box, the mount, the balancing, and the remote or wall control, and we do it at existing fixture locations in homes and rentals from San Francisco to Oakland, Berkeley, Walnut Creek, and down the Peninsula.

Where we draw the honest line: if there's no wiring at the spot you want the fan — meaning a new circuit, a new switch loop, or fishing wire across a finished ceiling — that's licensed-electrician territory, and we'll say so up front rather than take it on. Clear scope is why the price we quote is the price you pay.

Need the light fixtures done too? See light fixture installation, or the full list of 20 services. In the East Bay we're based in Oakland — see our Oakland handyman page.

Good questions

Ceiling fan FAQ

How much does ceiling fan installation cost?

It depends on whether there's an existing fixture to swap, the ceiling height, and whether a fan-rated box or downrod is needed. A straight replacement at an existing fixture is quick; a high or vaulted ceiling takes longer. Tell us the room and ceiling height and we'll quote it upfront — estimates are free.

Can you install a ceiling fan where there's no existing light or fixture?

If there's already a ceiling electrical box we can usually swap in a fan-rated box and hang the fan. If there's no wiring or box at that spot at all — meaning a new circuit or fishing new wire through the ceiling — that's licensed-electrician work, and we'll tell you honestly and can point you to one.

Can you install a fan on a high or vaulted ceiling?

Yes. High and vaulted ceilings are common in Bay Area hills homes and lofts. We use the correct downrod length and a sloped-ceiling mount where needed, and bring the right ladder or gear for the height. Send a photo and the approximate ceiling height.

Can you fix a wobbling ceiling fan?

Usually yes. Wobble is often a loose mounting box, an unbalanced blade set, or a box that was never fan-rated. We re-secure the mount, balance the blades, and swap in a fan-rated box if the original can't safely carry the load.

Do you supply the fan, or should I buy it?

Either works. Most people pick the fan they want and we install it; if you'd rather we source one, tell us the room size and style and we'll include it in the quote. Have the remote or wall control on hand if it came separately.
